Dear Short Avenue Families~

We hope you are enjoying your Summer!! This is the last Update written by yours truly, as your new FoSA Board takes over July1st.

All FoSA emails and texts come to you via FreshSchools, our private and secure communications platform. Ms. Reynolds, our Principal, also uses FreshSchools to email you important information. We pay $1200 a year for FreshSchools, (including texting) which ensures that your data will not be sold to third parties, unlike free platforms.
We encourage you to accept the FreshSchools invitation, (which we will send again), download the app to your phone and use FreshSchools to contact friends over the summer for play dates. When school starts in August we will put all the kids in their assigned classrooms.
NEWS!!

Halton Pardee Realtors, one of our Banner Sponsors, is offering $250 to the school of each child (up to the first 20 kids) to memorize and recite the poem below at the new Mar Vista office. Our own Lily Neflas has already earned our school $250!!!! Thanks Lily!!!!

CONTEST RULES From Halton Pardee:
Join our Happy Dad’s Day contest and your child can win $250 for their school!

To enter, schedule a time to have your child visit our new Mar Vista | Culver City office and recite the poem below. The first 20 children to memorize and recite the poem “Somebody Said It Couldn’t Be Done” will win $250.00 for their school. We’ve been doing this contest for 4 years now as we enjoy seeing everyone that participates and hope we can start a new tradition in your family. Good luck and we look forward to meeting you!

Somebody Said It Couldn’t Be Done

By Edgar Albert Guest

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done

But she* with a chuckle replied

That “maybe it couldn’t,” but she would be one

Who wouldn’t say so till she’d tried.

So she buckled right in with the trace of a grin

On her face. If she worried she hid it.

She started to sing as she tackled the thing

That couldn’t be done, and she did it!

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;

At least no one ever has done it;”

But she took off her coat and she took off her hat

And the first thing we knew she’d begun it.

With a lift of her chin and a bit of a grin,

Without any doubting or quiddit,

She started to sing as she tackled the thing

That couldn’t be done, and she did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,

There are thousands to prophesy failure,

There are thousands to point out to you one by one,

The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,

Just take off your coat and go to it;

Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing

That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it. (END)

Dear Short Avenue Families~

2017-2018 Week of January 28 (Week #21 of 38)
NEWS!!
Budget: Recent Expenses include $133 for the Winter Holiday Program and hot chocolate and cookies after our visit from LAPD’s Santa.
And $975 for our first ever internal audit of the FoSA financial records and the annual tax return to CPA Ralph J. Garrido and Associates, Inc. If anyone is in need of an accountant, as tax season is readily approaching, please consider using Ralph.
LA Road Runners: We made $173!!
Free Nutrition Classes: The 2nd class last week focused on getting more vegetables and fruits into our diets. Fresh is always best, however frozen is a great alternative and still has most of the vitamins and minerals that fresh do. Frozen fruits and veggies can be more cost effective and are a better alternative to canned, which have a lot of sodium and should be rinsed prior to using.
One of our teachers made a delicious dish for us right in the classroom that took about 25 minutes. She took sweet potatoes, squash, kale, onion and coconut milk, put it in a rice cooker on the “white rice” setting and we had a healthy side dish to enjoy at the end of the class.

There were a lot of feelings and stories shared by all those in attendance. These classes serve as a great platform for exchanging ideas, recipes and tips between parents and the teachers.

Children’s Hospital is sponsoring 7 classes aimed to teach us about healthy food choices, shopping on a budget and easy ways to incorporate more exercise in our busy lives. Coffee With The Principal Update: Ms. Reynolds explained Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), which is a student-centered approach to teaching math. It starts with what your students already know and builds on their natural number sense and intuitive approaches to problem solving. CGI is a way of listening to students, asking smart questions and engaging with their thinking – all with the goal of uncovering and expanding every student’s mathematical understanding. CGI has been around for 20 years, and is being adapted in all the classrooms at Short Avenue and throughout LAUSD.

Ms. Reynolds also discussed the importance of good attendance. Any time your child is absent, no matter the reason, it costs our school $63.48 per student. If your child has a fever or is too sick to come to school, please keep them home. But do think twice about missing school for any reason other than illness or emergency.

!!!!BIG NEWS!!!!

$10,000 Library Makeover Awarded to Short Avenue School

Dear Short Avenue Families,

Do you remember seeing emails for the LAUSD Summer Reading Challenge? They were asking students to read and log their reading hours. Well it turns out that many of our students did participate in this challenge, and one of our students, Luna Vargas in TK, had her name picked out of a hat, awarding our Short AvenuAe School as the winner of a $10,000 Library Makeover!!!
Big Thanks goes to Alicia Casilli, our tireless library aid, for spearheading this contest and the love of reading to all of our students! We also thank the Vargas Family and all the families who participated in this contest. It is hard to imagine that anyone ever wins these things, but we did!!!
You may notice district employees painting and tidying up the school this week. This is in preparation for an assembly on Friday November 3rd at 8:00am, where we will be presented with “the big check” and will receive a visit from the international bestselling author Amy Ephron, who will sign copies of her new book The Castle in the Mist for the 5th and 6th grade classes, and the students who were part of the challenge. The book is available through Amazon for anyone else who would like to purchase a book. All Students will receive a bookmark!
The $10,000 will go directly to our library for new books and furniture. A survey will be conducted in the classrooms for students and teachers to suggest books for us to add to our collection.
Congratulations to Luna Vargas, Alicia Casilli, all the students who entered, and the students of Short Avenue School who will benefit from this exciting win!!!
